Blogging Wars: Metaphysics and Hammers

Kevin was right that a lot of weak arguments and comments came out yesterday --

if you are going to be witty, understand that smart is a part of the definition (root of word -- 900 AD; ME; OE wittig orig., wise).

On to Round Two -- the intelligent comments!

You are paired up with another classmate blogger.
Decide who is the Plato/Socrates or Aristotle defender and who is the Nietzsche defender and start a dialogue of at least three posts each, with quotes from the packets, debating the question below:

The use of reason to solve problems is always going to create a better understanding of how to act and what a person should be and think based on the Truth.

Nietzsche people need to read to page 49 to get more ammo -- a bigger hammer.

To Eric & Kevin: (Melanie as Aristotle)
Reason is the perfect way to solve problems, as the Truth gives us a perfect guideline to live by. Without the truth, we have nothing to go on and would instead stumble into a world of chaotic lack of law. The Truth alloes us to have a moral guidline for the development of our virtue, the foundation of our soul. If living in a world of relativity, nothing matters, leaving everyone with simply the vices of the world. A relative world has no reason to do anything, leaving a person with the options of being virtious for vitue's sake. This realitivty leads to a world of dialecticions, people who are only basing their reasons on what they think. Being a dialecticion based on only ones perceptions, and not on the Truth, leads to a life without reason, an empty babbling without any origin to back it up. You, Nietzche, instead of "aruging from the origin", are arguing against it, giving your reasons the hollow ring of falsities. These arguements lead to nothing but empty words, going against your own definition of strength, as without anything to back your knowledge up, you words are as weak as saline filled muscles. Without the Truth to back up your reasons, you are left without anything to back youself up, and therefore have an overall weaker arguement and moral standing.

Alec P,

If there is no Truth, what is the point of even living? We are here for a reason, &there is a right & wrong. The Truth is our light, without it we are blind. If there is no absolute truth, &right/wrong, how do you even justify what is good or evil? You have nothing to base any of your thoughts on. Which is why the Truth is imporant &you can't just say whatever you want &think its right.

"it's not living that matters, but living rightly" -Socrates

The truth is important because if there was no truth then even making this argument is pointless. Nothing gets accomplished without truth. It gives purpose and virtue to living. Socrates states, "virtue was the most valuable of all possessions; the ideal life was spent in search of the Good. Truth lies beneath the shadows of existence, and it is the job of the philosopher to show the rest how little they really know." You keep swinging your little Fisher Price hammer while I'll a virtous moral life

To Hannah:(Socrates)
In society, the truth is in the power of the people, the strong shall rise, while the meek will not be able to rise in society. The week include the the way that you argue. Weaknesses lies in the words. Words are a bunch of useless texts in which mean absolutely nothing and do not lead to the truth in which to find reason. Who made it possible for the truth to be defined in words.? Words create who you are in this world, and your perception of who you are is creating a mirage on your own view of yourself. Why is everything you deem truthful based on your ablility to argue and transform words? Words are meaningless in nature, and it leads to nothing.

Kimi Socrates- reason and logic are the way to create a better understanding of how to act because without the Truth, you have nothing to base opinions or actions upon. Finding a universal truth to prove yourself is the only way to justify actions and make sure your soul is healthy.

The Truth will lead us into doing the right thing, so any problems can be solved easily with a little thinking. Using muscle doesn't solve anything if you can't think through a situation.

All reason should be based on absolute truth or finding the absolute truth. once the truth is found, all reason will be in agreement with everyone because everyone will have the same answer to every problem because the absolute truth will be the same to everyone. With your logic of morals and language, everyone will have different opinions and perceptions about the world beecause everyone's knowledge is based on different virtues and morals. However, the truth will provide a common answer to everyone. Socrates describes the story of the cave saying that "the men could only see the shadows and describe the shadows." This isn't knowing the truth of the object, but only a perception of what the object looks like. Using language and morals will only confuse people that do not believe in the same morals and language the person uses.

Nietzhejgfdfiw, how ever you spell your name. ( kluong )
You are speaking in riddles.
but as far as the meek go, that is completely false. the smallest weekest little children rise up and become brilliant. you do not have to be socially or physically strong to succeed in life. The truth will lead you to every answer you have ever questioned. BOOM.

lets go riddler.

Alan Raspberry said...

Socrates your whole life is trying to attain this truth, understand this one being or thing that somehow explains everything on Earth. Yet, you fail to realize that we have been living on this Earth for thousands of years without the truth, quite successfully I might add. It is not the truth that will provide us higher thinking, but competition. The strongest and smartest will move to create bigger and better things while the loser is left behind, much like Darwin's theory of Evolution.

What is the point of finding a truth if it only leads to DEATH. What happens when you find death. ABSOLUTLY NOTHING. You find "the Truth", then you sit there and do nothing at at all.

The Search for "The Truth" = pointless

kaitlynchang said...

Kaitlyn Socrates to Alan- Using reason to solve problems definitley helps someone know how to act. We rely on the Truth and live to find the Truth. Without the Truth we would have no purpose. Morals are also very important when solving problems. You should do what you know is right. Don't do the wrong thing just to get ahead.

Okay Socrates (Alek)I'm right and you know it. Why don't you use your metaphysical concepts to figure that out old man. I've got the Will to Power. That's the way to live life and not by your little games of contridiction

Alec P. said...

Rachel D,

Custom represents the experiences of men of earlier times as to what they supposed useful and harmful - but the sense for custom (morality) applies, not to these experiences as such, but to the age, the sanctity, the indiscussability of the custom. And so this feeling is a hindrance to the acquisition of new experiences and the correction of customs: that is to say, morality is a hindrance to the development of new and better customs: it makes stupid.

Hannah: (Socrates)
The meek uses words in order to defend their case. Words have no backing and there is no possible way you can describe the truth using words that mean nothing. Why do you push to find the truth, if you state that you can never reach it? And if you do state that the truth can be found, how can you push for the death of your learning. Once you find the truth, you overall learning experience will end. The Truth will just ruin you futher as a person.

kaitlynchang said...

How can we rely on the Truth if we don't know what it is? You don't even know how to approach getting to the Truth. Philosophers have been trying to discover the Truth for thousands of years with zero to show for their effort. Its great to sit and think aimlessly your whole life, but its the strong and powerful that are successful and get ahead. My main question is how can you can know your purpose and morals in life when you havent discovered your precious truth yet?

You are wasting your life and should spend it gaining power and living to the fullest. Hvae fun wasting your life finding something you cannot find, something you know you cannot find. I think I'll become King of the world =)

Nietzsche claimed the 'death' of God would eventually lead to the loss of any universal perspective on things, and along with it any coherent sense of objective truth. Instead we would retain only our own multiple, diverse, and fluid perspectives. This view has acquired the name "perspectivism".

kaitlynchang said...

Nietcsche- thats my whole point..we need to find the truth. What's the point of getting ahead if in the end it really has no meaning? Getting ahead isn't always the right thing to do.

Into the right thing... Your an excuse for the modern day Emo or Suicidal.
Looking for the truth doesnt lead you to being right, it just leads you into the very mouth of death.

And of course any problem can be solved by thinking. 1+1=2 isnt it? Common thinking is what the brain was practicall created to do. A problem is a problem and we have to fix that problem before it ends up destroying us. But whats the point, when you just want to lead yourself into destruction anyway. You contradictory old fool.

(Jade) fair enough but if there is no truth than why are you alive?

Asherman M. said...

Eric and Kevin,
Here's what I believe the truth is : "while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true". I.E., ther truth is what "is". But what is the "is", the essence of everything. The "is" of life is simply the absoltue truth, the value of everything, the purpose of life. We, as people, should be constantly searching for it, or else we have no validation in life. Your failure to try to search for the Truth gives you life no purpose, making your power that much weaker. You hammer, in essence, is made out of rubber.

lhickey said...

Lauren (Socrates) to Dan

"Death is not the worst that can happen to men."

Go ahead and think that Truth=Death. We'll all die one day, but if you are tortured everyday, isn't that worse, even if you never find the Truth?

Alec P. said...

The customs are rooted in the experiences and knowlegde the ancient people and passed down and refined by generations of more knowledgable people.

Mackenzie-
Searching for the truth is never a waste of time. Life is supposed to be spent searching for the truth, not just sitting around. You can only enjoy life if you make something of it and spend it wisely on finding a truth. What is better than searching for the truth? And once you find it, life will be meaningful and worth living.

Nietxhzje, ( kluong )

How can you say words mean nothing? words mean everything. you are using them right now.
"Death may be the greatest of all human blessings." Just like Buddha, he reached enlightenmeant and stayed on the earth to teach. Then when he finally tought all he could, he lay down on the ground and died. he had nothing to give to the world anymore so what good was he.? The Truth will make me more knowledgable than everyon you know, including yourself.

Alan Raspberry said...

Find the truth? Take your time. You don't even know how to find it and you philosophers have been spending thousands of years looking for it. All you want to do is ignore the world around us to find this silly Truth. You're advocating the unnecesity of life and the world.

Kevin Morse said...

To Melanie

"All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth."
What then is truth? A mobile army of metaphors, metonyms, and anthropomorphisms -- in short, a sum of human relations, which have been enhanced, transposed, and embellished poetically and rhetorically, and which after long use seem firm, canonical, and obligatory to a people: truths are illusions about which one has forgotten that is what they are; metaphors which are worn out and without sensuous power; coins which have lost their pictures and now matter only as metal, no longer as coins. There are no facts, only interpretations. There is no truth, only untruth.

P.S. Be Gentle!!

You don't care about anything meaningful. All you want is power and success. And in the end if your life has no meaning, you have nothing. Have fun with all your power.

Eric Pesce said...

There are flaws in your truth, therefore making you have less purpose than I. How is it that I have no purpose when it is you that doesn't even know what you're looking for? I know exactly what I am looking for and that is the posession of power.

Daniel said...

To Lauren (Socrates)

I believe you, only fools dont believe in death, we WILL all die one day. And you speak of being tortured, that searching for something that you can never obtain is the better choice. Your just as contradictory as always. That IS torture, your living your life for a non-existant cause, searching for something that you will never achieve. Stop wasting your life searching for nothing. Everybody dies the same way, by dieing. But everybody lives a different way, to make sure they have a "good life" before they die. Meanwhile, you work towards death, by torturing yourself every day. Your contradictory ways are annoying, start making sense so we can have an actual discussion already

hannah said...

kluong,

The truth wil end my learning experience BECAUSE there is nothing left to learn, meaning i am the smartest person there could be. i will no longer wuestion things, because i know the truth behind it. Just because you are insignificant and unable to find the truth does not mean i should not search for it. what is the meaning of the hammer ? thats just a defense for yourself like words are for me.Words are not violent while hammers and wrenches are. Violence is not the answer. Words have every backing there is. Behind a hammer there is metal and wood. behind words there is meaning and truth. we all die one day, so id rather die with the truth or knowing i tried to find it than die with a rusty old hammer.
